The Ultimate Guide to Using a Water Distiller: Benefits, Health Advantages, and Saving Money

water distiller

In the quest for pure, clean drinking water, many people are turning to water distillers. These devices offer a reliable and efficient way to ensure the water you consume is free from contaminants. If you’re considering investing in a water distiller, you’re on the right track.

This blog post explores the numerous benefits of owning a water distiller, the health advantages of distilled water, and the potential cost savings.

What is a Water Distiller?

A water distiller is a device that purifies water by boiling it and then condensing the steam back into liquid form. This process removes impurities, including bacteria, viruses, heavy metals, and other contaminants, resulting in highly purified water.

Benefits of Owning a Water Distiller

1. Superior Purity

One of the most significant benefits of using a water distiller is the superior purity of the water it produces. Unlike other water purification methods that may leave some impurities behind, distillation effectively removes almost all contaminants. This includes:

  • Bacteria and Viruses: Boiling the water kills harmful microorganisms.
  • Heavy Metals: Distillation removes metals like lead, mercury, and arsenic.
  • Chemicals: Many chemicals, including chlorine and fluoride, are removed during distillation.
  • Dissolved Solids: The process eliminates salts and other dissolved solids.

2. Improved Taste and Odour

Distilled water is free from impurities that can affect its taste and odour. Many people find that distilled water tastes cleaner and fresher than tap water or even bottled water. This can be particularly beneficial for cooking and making beverages like coffee and tea, where the purity of the water can significantly impact the flavour.

3. Convenience and Reliability

Having a water distiller at home means you always have access to pure water. There’s no need to worry about running out of bottled water or relying on potentially contaminated tap water. Most home water distillers are compact and easy to use, making them a convenient addition to your kitchen.

4. Environmental Benefits

By using a water distiller, you can significantly reduce your reliance on bottled water. This has a positive impact on the environment, as it reduces plastic waste and the carbon footprint associated with the production and transportation of bottled water.

Health Advantages of Distilled Water

1. Elimination of Harmful Contaminants

Distilled water is free from contaminants that can pose health risks. Drinking distilled water means you are not ingesting harmful substances that may be present in tap water, such as:

  • Lead: Prolonged exposure to lead can cause serious health problems, particularly in children.
  • Chlorine: While chlorine is used to disinfect water, long-term exposure can have adverse health effects.
  • Fluoride: Excessive fluoride intake can lead to dental and skeletal fluorosis.
  • Pesticides and Herbicides: These can seep into groundwater and contaminate drinking water sources.

2. Detoxification

Drinking distilled water can aid in the body’s detoxification process. Since distilled water is free from minerals and contaminants, it can help to flush out toxins and waste products more effectively. This can contribute to overall better health and well-being.

3. Better for Cooking and Cleaning

Using distilled water for cooking can prevent unwanted substances from altering the flavour of your food. It also means your cookware and kitchen appliances are less likely to accumulate scale and mineral deposits, extending their lifespan and maintaining their performance. Our kettle is now so clean. Prior to using a water distiller, I was having to add lemon juice every other week to eliminate the limescale.

4. Healthier Skin and Hair

Distilled water is gentle on the skin and hair. Unlike hard water, which contains minerals that can dry out and irritate the skin, distilled water is soft and pure. This can be beneficial for people with sensitive skin or conditions like eczema.

Cost Savings of Using a Water Distiller

1. Savings on Bottled Water

One of the most immediate and noticeable savings from using a water distiller is the reduction in spending on bottled water. Bottled water can be expensive, and the costs add up over time. By investing in a water distiller, you can produce your own purified water at a fraction of the cost.

2. Reduced Health Costs

Drinking pure, distilled water can contribute to better overall health, potentially reducing the need for medical treatment related to waterborne contaminants. Fewer doctor visits and medications can translate to significant cost savings over time.

3. Appliance Longevity

Using distilled water in household appliances such as coffee makers, kettles, and humidifiers can prevent the build-up of mineral deposits, which can cause damage and reduce efficiency. This means your appliances will last longer and perform better, saving you money on repairs and replacements.

4. Environmental Savings

While the environmental savings may not directly impact your wallet, they are significant. Reducing plastic waste and conserving resources contribute to a healthier planet, which benefits everyone. Additionally, some regions may offer incentives or rebates for reducing plastic use, which can add to your savings.

5. Lower Maintenance Costs

Tap water often contains minerals and impurities that can clog plumbing and reduce the efficiency of water heaters and other systems. Using distilled water can help maintain these systems, reducing the frequency and cost of maintenance.

Water Distiller vs Skuma

My husband and I were one of the first people to sign up for the Skuma device, and it took them about 18 months to deliver it. We had constant problems, and I didn’t find the water tasted any different from tap water. It was also noisy and I kept having to get rid of the waste water far too frequently. It was heavy and fiddly to refill. When I requested it be looked at again by Skuma customer service as it began dripping after use, they ignored me so I eventually put the device outside for anyone to take. What a waste of £189.

We then invested in a four litre water distiller from Amazon and it’s one of the best investments we have ever made. We have not bought this to save the environment, or reduce bottled water use, as we never bought bottled water, but to cut out the fluoride, chloride and other contaminants found in tap water. I could never drink our tap water. The filthy film on top of the water always put me off. With the distiller, it’s certainly lovely to cook and drink coffee and tea made with purified water. The key to never running out of distilled water is to use if frequently, Keep a couple of glass bottles in your fridge for instant chilled water to drink, and use the rest in your kettle or for cooking. We have since returned the Amazon one, as it started leaking outside of the hole, and bought a six litre distiller from Waterpure. It’s excellent and requires less filling.

Some people spend a lot of money on bottled water, which can be high in sodium, so why not save money by investing in a water purifier / distiller. I guess the only downside is that the device is rather large, and will need to be close to a plug socket. You can also choose to put back the electrolytes that have been purified out of your tap water with this brand of trace minerals, but I prefer to get my vitamins and minerals through my diet.
